Who We Are

In 1992, then-mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly made a special appeal to the residents of Northwest Washington to help solve the growing problem of homelessness in Washington DC. The Temple Sinai Social Action Committee set out to identify and create a meaningful response. Over the next year, the committee met with social workers, caregivers, philanthropists and community leaders to determine the best course of action. What resulted was the design of a family-oriented residence that would give homeless families the support they needed for two years to transition to stability. Since its founding, Sinai House has served over 40 families, including nearly 80 children.

There are formal acknowledgements of our success. The Fannie Mae Foundation has given us monetary awards over the years in recognition of the effectiveness of our program and our outreach to the community. Year after year we enjoy loyal support from area organizations, corporations, and especially the members of Temple Sinai, with which we are affiliated.
